Spiritual In a dissenter church stripped of ornament, where a pew insists on bolt-uprightness, and bare drably coloured walls dreep with condensation and plain wainscoting and floorboards smell of creosote where, ransacked of trappings, surplus counts for nothing and a scripture’s verbatim speaks extempore, fetters to raw material all there is: this clayey foregone soul fraught in a signless expanse between constellation and a braking wave once and forever. from For Crying Out Loud (Salmon Poetry, 2017)

Serve To Illustrate structure cannot be understood unless it be examined - Dr. Thomas Southwood Smith c1824 Here, I'm surprised amongst them, having come to view the artist’s white-coated, fact-of-the-matter take on Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson, hanging - three by two meters oil on canvas, without frame - on the south wall of the anatomy room in the College of Surgeons, looking down on, animating this dissection room’s needs must goings-on, where, without thought, some twenty two give up their creaturely human workings to serve to illustrate. And what, pray tell, did you expect? Through large high windows north light streams in; it’s quiet - smells of school lab, formaldehyde. Rest assured, they lie beneath their covers. |
